A vertical axis wind turbine (or VAWT) has a main rotor shaft arranged vertically. An advantage of this arrangement is that the turbine does not need to be pointed into the wind to be effective, which is an advantage in locations where the wind direction is highly variable. This is also an advantage when the turbine is integrated into a building, as it is inherently less maneuverable. Additionally, the generator and gearbox can be placed close to the ground, using direct drive from the rotor assembly to the ground gearbox, improving maintenance accessibility. 

Vertical axis wind turbines were developed to address and compensate for the cost and efficiency constraints inherent in HAWT designs. VAWT captures prevailing winds regardless of wind direction (or changes in direction), so there is no need to move when the wind changes.

HAWTs have complex gearboxes that must sit on top of 300-foot towers, making them more difficult, dangerous and expensive for technicians to service. On the other hand, VAWT gearboxes can be located near the ground or water, making it easier and safer for technicians to service them. The VAWT has a lower center of gravity for more stability and less torque, especially when faced with strong winds. The new VAWT design improves upon the early vibration VAWT issues that previously caused failure.
