A vertical axis wind turbine (or VAWT) has a main rotor shaft arranged vertically. An advantage of this arrangement is that the turbine does not need to be pointed into the wind to be effective, which is an advantage in locations where the wind direction is highly variable. This is also an advantage when the turbine is integrated into a building, as it is inherently less maneuverable. Additionally, the generator and gearbox can be placed close to the ground, using direct drive from the rotor assembly to the ground gearbox, improving maintenance accessibility.
The main advantage of vertical axis wind turbines compared to horizontal axis wind turbines is their insensitivity to wind direction and turbulence. As a result, vertical axis wind turbines can be installed closer to the ground, making them safer and cheaper to build and maintain. It still needs to get plenty of wind, though. The main disadvantage of vertical axis wind turbines is the inefficiency of dragging each blade back into the wind at each half rotation. Well positioned horizontal axis wind turbines are continuously driven by the wind after alignment and can be twice as efficient as ideally positioned vertical axis wind turbines. Nonetheless, the simplicity and variety of vertical axis wind turbines make reading interesting, as described below.
One of the limiting factors for wind turbines is their generator technology. There is no consensus between academia and industry on the best wind turbine technology. Traditionally, there are three main types of wind turbines available for various wind turbine systems, namely direct current (DC), alternating current (AC) synchronous and alternating current asynchronous generators. In principle, each can operate at fixed or variable speed. Due to the fluctuating nature of wind power, it is advantageous to operate the WTG at variable speed, which can reduce physical stresses on the turbine blades and drive train, and improve system aerodynamic efficiency and torque transient behavior.
