Horizontal axis turbines are similar to propeller aircraft engines. Horizontal axis turbines have blades similar to aircraft propellers, usually with three blades. The vertical axis turbine looks like an egg beater. The blades of the vertical axis turbine are attached to the top and bottom of the vertical rotor. The most common vertical axis turbine is the Darrieus wind turbine, named after French engineer Georges Darrieus who patented the design in 1931, and looks like a giant two-bladed egg beater. Some models of vertical axis turbines are 100 feet tall and 50 feet wide. There are very few vertical axis wind turbines in use today because they are not as performant as horizontal axis turbines.
