The term "lithium ion" does not refer to a single electrochemical couple, but to a series of distinct chemical reactions, all characterized by the transfer of lithium ions between electrodes during charge and discharge reactions. Lithium-ion batteries do not contain metallic lithium; instead, ions are inserted into the structure of other materials, such as lithiated metal oxides or phosphates in the positive electrode (cathode), carbon (usually graphite) or titanium in the negative electrode (anode) Lithium oxide.
The term "lithium polymer" (or more precisely, lithium-ion polymer) refers to a lithium-ion design in which electrodes are held together by a porous polymer matrix.
