A vertical axis wind turbine (or VAWT) has a main rotor shaft arranged vertically. An advantage of this arrangement is that the turbine does not need to be pointed into the wind to be effective, which is an advantage in locations where the wind direction is highly variable. This is also an advantage when the turbine is integrated into a building, as it is inherently less maneuverable. Additionally, the generator and gearbox can be placed close to the ground, using direct drive from the rotor assembly to the ground gearbox, improving maintenance accessibility.

The generators of vertical axis wind turbines can be placed on the ground, which can optimize price and performance. The system developed at Uppsala University uses a direct drive generator and therefore has no gearbox, which is beneficial since gearbox failure is a common cause of downtime for conventional wind turbines. Instead, vertical wind turbines are electrically controlled by generators. Eliminating the pitch system further reduces downtime risk and maintenance requirements.

A1:  We strongly advise against installing turbines on roofs or buildings as they can only withstand weak turbulent winds. Several field trials have found that turbines installed on buildings perform poorly, producing only a fraction of the energy if installed in the right location.

A3:  The development of the first installation of any wind turbine will only be permitted if the property does not have an existing air source heat pump. Additional wind turbines or air source heat pumps within the same property require planning permission.
