Q1: Can I install a small wind turbine on my roof?

A1:  We strongly advise against installing turbines on roofs or buildings as they can only withstand weak turbulent winds. Several field trials have found that turbines installed on buildings perform poorly, producing only a fraction of the energy if installed in the right location.

 

Q2: Can I have a wind turbine in my backyard?

A2:  Most wind turbines are not small enough to fit in a backyard - because larger size means more energy, and a single blade can be longer than a football field. And, wind power is loud enough for neighbors to complain, even if the wind farm is miles away.

 

Q3: Do I need a permit to install a wind turbine?

A3:  The development of the first installation of any wind turbine will only be permitted if the property does not have an existing air source heat pump. Additional wind turbines or air source heat pumps within the same property require planning permission.
