Choosing the Right Solar Controller/Regulator
PWM is a good low-cost option:
• For smaller systems
• Where system efficiency does not matter, such as trickle charging.
• For solar panels with maximum supply voltage (Vmp) up to 18V for charging 12V batteries (36V for 24V batteries etc).
MPPT controllers are the best:
• For larger systems, an additional 20%* or more of energy harvesting is worthwhile
• When the solar array voltage is significantly higher than the battery voltage, such as using a household panel to charge a 12V battery
As the panel voltage increases, the MPPT controller will produce higher returns compared to the PWM controller. 1. e. A 160W earbud panel using 36 conventional monocrystalline cells with a maximum power amplifier of 8.4A will provide about 8.6A at 12V; while a 180W panel with more than 4 cells will provide the same amperage, 4 The extra battery increases the panel voltage by 2V. The PWM controller won't get any extra power, but the MPPT controller will get an extra 11.1% (4/36) from the 180W panel.
