Choosing the Right Solar Controller/Regulator
PWM is a good low-cost option:
• For smaller systems
• Where system efficiency does not matter, such as trickle charging.
• For solar panels with maximum supply voltage (Vmp) up to 18V for charging 12V batteries (36V for 24V batteries etc).
Main difference
MPPT charge controllers are more efficient than PWM charge controllers. As a rule of thumb, the conversion efficiencies of PWMs and MPPTs are about 75% and 95%, respectively.PWM charge controllers are cheaper than MPPT charge controllers. Many popular PWMs retail for $20-50, while MPPTs start at around $100.When connecting multiple solar panels together, PWM charge controllers often need to connect them in parallel. Most MPPT charge controllers have a high enough PV voltage limit that you can connect them in series. Wiring in parallel increases the current (amps), which may require thicker wires and devices with higher amperage ratings.
PWM charge controllers are usually best for small solar arrays of 300-400 watts or less. MPPT charge controllers are generally best for solar panels of 400 watts or larger. The larger the size of the solar panel, the more meaningful the MPPT becomes.
