A vertical axis wind turbine (or VAWT) has a main rotor shaft arranged vertically. An advantage of this arrangement is that the turbine does not need to be pointed into the wind to be effective, which is an advantage in locations where the wind direction is highly variable. This is also an advantage when the turbine is integrated into a building, as it is inherently less maneuverable. Additionally, the generator and gearbox can be placed close to the ground, using direct drive from the rotor assembly to the ground gearbox, improving maintenance accessibility.
This type of wind turbine has been the subject of much research. It has the advantage of not requiring a system for orienting the blades and having mechanical parts (multipliers and generators) on the ground, thus facilitating maintenance operations. On the other hand, some of these wind turbines have to be trained at start-up, which is a disadvantage of mat as it is subject to strong mechanical constraints that make manufacturers abandon these types of wind turbines (except low power) in favor of Use a horizontal axis fan.
Vertical axis wind turbines were the first structures developed to generate electricity, which contradicts traditional horizontal axis wind turbines. Their advantage is that control components and generators are located on the ground and are therefore easily accessible. Many variants have been tested since the 1920s, many without success, but two structures are well industrialized.
