Lithium is the lightest metal and can float on water. It also has the largest electrochemical potential, making it one of the most reactive metals. Many variants of the basic lithium chemistry have been developed to optimize the battery for specific applications, or in some cases to bypass the original technology's patents. Lithium metal reacts violently with water and can ignite and burn. Early commercial batteries using metallic lithium cathodes were considered unsafe in some cases, however, modern batteries do not use free lithium, but instead combine lithium with other elements into more benign compounds that do not interact with water react.
A typical lithium-ion battery uses carbon as the anode and lithium cobalt oxide or lithium manganese compound as the cathode. Electrolytes are usually based on lithium salts in organic solvents.
