Wind turbines work on a simple principle: instead of using electricity to make wind—like a fan—wind turbines use wind to make electricity. Wind turns the propeller-like blades of a turbine around a rotor, which spins a generator, which creates electricity.

 

The terms "wind energy" and "wind power" both describe the process by which the wind is used to generate mechanical power or electricity. This mechanical power can be used for specific tasks (such as grinding grain or pumping water) or a generator can convert this mechanical power into electricity.

 

For permanent magnet excitation, the generator achieves maintenance-free operation and reduced failure rates by removing the external excitation slip rings. Since no external excitation system is required, the power generation efficiency is improved. By using water cooling and an internal fan cooling system, the generator does not draw air from the outside, which is suitable for environments with many fine particles in spaces or coastal/offshore areas.

 

Wind turbines mounted on top of tall towers collect wind energy and convert it into electricity. The turbine output is then made compatible with utility electricity and the output is fed to the home wiring at the circuit breaker panel.

 

Homes are served by both wind turbines and utility companies. If the wind speed is below about 7 mph, the wind turbine will have no output and all the required energy is purchased from the utility company. As the wind speed increases, the turbine output begins to increase, and the amount of energy purchased from the utility company decreases proportionally. When turbine output exceeds what the house needs, the excess power is sold to the utility company. All this is done automatically. There are no batteries in a standard residential wind power system.
