Off-grid systems are built using AC or DC coupled power supplies. AC-coupled power supplies include common solar inverters, wind turbines, or backup generators (gensets), while DC-coupled power supplies include MPPT solar charge controllers or micro-hydro systems.

 

In order to function as a backup power source, the hybrid inverter must be able to isolate itself from the grid during a power outage and use battery power to back up any home essential circuits**.
